END:CIV examines our culture’s addiction to systematic violence and environmental exploitation, and probes the resulting epidemic of poisoned landscapes and shell-shocked nations. Based in part on Endgame, the best-selling book by Derrick Jensen, END:CIV asks: “If your homeland was invaded by aliens who cut down the forests, poisoned the water and air, and contaminated the food supply, would you resist?”

The causes underlying the collapse of civilizations are usually traced to overuse of resources. As we write this, the world is reeling from economic chaos, peak oil, climate change, environmental degradation, and political turmoil. Every day, the headlines re-hash stories of scandal and betrayal of the public trust. We don’t have to make outraged demands for the end of the current global system — it seems to be coming apart already.

But acts of courage, compassion and altruism abound, even in the most damaged places. By documenting the resilience of the people hit hardest by war and repression, and the heroism of those coming forward to confront the crisis head-on, END:CIV illuminates a way out of this all-consuming madness and into a saner future.

Backed by Jensen’s narrative, the film calls on us to act as if we truly love this land. The film trips along at a brisk pace, using music, archival footage, motion graphics, animation, slapstick and satire to deconstruct the global economic system, even as it implodes around us. END:CIV illustrates first-person stories of sacrifice and heroism with intense, emotionally-charged images that match Jensen’s poetic and intuitive approach. Scenes shot in the back country provide interludes of breathtaking natural beauty alongside clearcut evidence of horrific but commonplace destruction.

END:CIV features interviews with Paul Watson, Waziyatawin,  Gord Hill, Michael Becker, Peter Gelderloos, Lierre Keith, James Howard Kunstler, Stephanie McMillan, Qwatsinas, Rod Coronado, John Zerzan and more.

.

“In the face of collapsing ecosystems, mass-extinctions, and global genocide, END:CIV is undoubtedly one of the most important films of the 21st century. López unapologetically burns all indoctrinated illusions and exposes critical truths and realities carefully kept from the public. López has crafted a brilliant and courageous exposé which fully exposes the mainstream environmental movement’s self-inflicted paralysis, stemming from a false sense of moral superiority, deep denial, delusion and, in many cases, unparalleled greed on behalf of those in positions of power in the champagne circuit. This is the film the corporate- colluded state hopes you never watch. This is the film the non-profit industrial complex hopes you never watch. Watch this film. ”

-Cory Morningstar
theartofannihilation.com

“In END:CIV, Franklin López does a refreshingly thorough and well packaged job of laying out the inherently self-destructive nature of westernized civilization and the ineptitude of peaceful reform. Using Derrick Jensen’s Endgame as a lose framework, López not only identifies root causes of systemic oppression and exploitation, but also exposes the deceptive nature of reformism and green-washing, instead spotlighting examples of indigenous resistance and the Earth Liberation Front. By the end of the film, passionate viewers will no longer just be questioning not whether western civilization is justified, but what they themselves can do to help bring it down.”

-Leslie James Pickering
Former spokesman for the Earth Liberation Front

“A fierce critique of systematic violence and industrial civilization, End:Civ is not intended for garden-variety environmentalists. If you are anywhere below, say, an 8 on that sliding scale of pissed off, then this film is going to scare you — which means you should watch it.”
-Eugene Weekly

.”A tour de force film from Franklin López which does more than justice to Derrick Jensen’s thesis that industrial civilization is destroying life on the planet.  Employing all the contemporary audio visual techniques our digital world makes possible for a single brilliant penurious filmmaker, López harvests sounds and images from our demented world to relentlessly show the rape of the mind and the earth.  To those outside the small choir who see the message of resistance as obvious, this powerful film makes them deal with it either by denial or acknowledging, yes I see it is obvious.”

James Becket
-Director of The Best Revenge

“Franklin Lopez is a fantastically talented filmmaker, who has created a powerful and important film about the most important topic ever: how to stop this culture from killing the planet.”
-Derrick Jensen, Author of Endgame

“By far the most routinely praised contemporary media activist is Franklin López. His shows and films not only possess a distinctive look and feel, but they also contain a wicked sense of humor that is often sorely lacking among alter-globalization activists. López’s work engages in constructing a new vision where popular culture serves the interests of the poor and dispossessed, where humor is reignited within activism, and the D.I.Y. ethics of punk and hip-hop allow those with talent and gumption to be the media, once again.”
-Chris Robé, Pop Matters

“Franklin Lopez’ END:CIV is a labour of love, a stunning 75 minutes film…”
John Zerzan, author of Future Primitive

“It brought me to tears…” “I recommend it to people”
-Alex Smith, Host of Radio Ecoshock

“Franklin Lopez’s END:CIV project is awesome.”
-Shannon Walsh, Director of H2Oil

“Both the quantity and the quality of this movement’s filmmaking is increasing. This is the big battlefield on which we fight right now.”
-Michael Rupert, CollapseNet.com

    Thank you, essential viewing

November 2011 – January 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of
    The Luddites’ War on Industry

The destruction of the Luddites by the State established the principle that industrialists have the right to continually impose new technology, without any process of negotiation, either with the people who have to operate it or with society at large.

This is a rather frightening, yet important and necessary film. It pointed out some arguments of non-violent protesters which I myself have subscribed to.

I am very, very reluctant to kill a human being. However, we can also fight by reducing the financial/economic power of our country’s owners and rulers. According to researchers, U.S. federal income taxes were initiated in 1913 unconstitutionally, which means Americans are not really legally bound to pay them. (Of course, if we say we will NOT, then we become criminals/tax evaders according to judges who receive their salaries in part thanks to those same taxes – can you say ‘conflict of interest’? (^^) ).

We outnumber our rulers, and they need us far more than we need them. Let us never forget that. And what the movie said is true – ‘Our descendants won’t care if we recycled, and won’t listen if we simply say we tried. They will care about the state of our planet – will it be LIVABLE or not? Finally, the statement that most people will be against, or at least not support, effective resistance actions/movements is probably (unfortunately) true.

One critique on the movie – portraying the Nazi’s as utterly evil (including the line about putting Jews in showers {presumably to ‘gas’ them} is apparently historically false – not to mention enabling of the Powers That Be who wish to control our view of history. Revisionist historians & scholars, and the head of a Auschwitz historical center on the site (named Dr. Piper) claim that no Jews were killed in gas ovens at Auschwitz. The Russians built the ‘ovens’ after WWII, and then they and Zionist Jews derived political benefit from lying again and again that the Nazi’s killed people in the ovens. Probably you will not believe this claim – which runs counter to everything the U.S. MSM tells us. To find out who’s right, you can watch David Cole’s videos of Auschwitz, which are taping the same Dr. Piper in his office. (Mr. Cole is an intelligent Jewish American who didn’t believe the stories behind ‘the’ holocaust, and investigated for himself. He was later forced by racist Zionists to recant… but his videos can still be viewed online.

Otherwise, this movie seems accurate and worthwhile noting. Thank you for allowing it to be viewed for free.

    Peace,

Thank you Sam Bolivar – The things you said about the benefits that are gained by the PTB by lying again and again cannot be said in Canada (and many other jurisdictions) without facing criminal charges.

Violence will only begat violence and we are vastly outgunned. This cinematic provocateur ultimately only serves the PTB.

The meek will inherit the earth.

  23. 23 ECW

I get it. Humans are evil, and the world would be better off without them. I subscribe to the notion that humans are one of nature’s mistakes and that if we were to destroy ourselves tomorrow in some global commodities war, after being in our present rapacious form for about 200,000 years, we would have been far less successful than the dinosaurs. But that’s OK. Nature and the earth will continue on just fine without us, and we will be but a blip on the geological time scale, just another failed species.

  24. 24 Jones

    NO TO WANTON WASTE
    =
NO TO VIOLENCE ON FELLOW PEOPLE / property

YES to changing our own lives. Walking the talk.

Ironic isn’t it, without civilization and technology, this video and its ideology would have a hard time propagating.

As to energy, it is neither being created nor destroyed. So much energy out there, fossil fuels are not the only resource. This both supports and contradicts some ideas in the video.

The video however does have it right in opening our eyes to some self-destructive habits that are going against the natural flow of things.

Some of these habits are quite dumb. (actually also common for many of us.) seems like instead of working with nature, we want to add to the load of work that we have to do, problems we have to fix. Indeed many newfangled solutions we implement, comes with more work /effort on nonessential stuff we have to do, resources that are used up, pollution produced.

The video wants to make a difference, and it probably will. It just needs to be pointed out that it’s making its extreme call of ending civilization from a position of comfort, not having gone through primitive times. (as far as i know, there has been no discovery of video media by archaeologists) The idea / thrust is not yet perfect.

And maybe the video’s current idea is not so new. Burning of Rome, Vandal hordes of Europe, etc.

Thing is, there are many instances from the past where groups of people have tried to destroy other people’s stuff, without provocation. Ironic that the video talks against people destroying established communities, but then seeks to do just that in the end.

And it is a testament to human (daretosay possibly God-given, cultivated) quality of perseverance that civilizations rebuilds again from the ashes.

Civilization itself is not wrong. Civilization that behaves like headless chickens, that is what can be corrected. (By not beheading chickens, figure of speech.) It can be observed that some people do still need to be led. They would then need to be led on a sure path.

Imagine headless chickens blindly following what this video says… That wouldn’t be much of an improvement at all.

  25. 25 neilant

I believe that the psychopaths & sociopaths who control this world are too powerful & too globally widespread to be stopped by the people….Slowed down a little perhaps, but thats all at best….

I hope Im wrong.. If not, then they will ultimately be defeated by mother nature…. They are all posessed by the worst charecteristics of human nature…. What they are doing is totally insane, but their destructive deeds will end at some point, one way or another..

  26. 26 Thomas

I watched this video and I didn’t understand the point it was trying to make, I did understand the point it made about greenpeace but the video gives no solution.

I used to say that I wanted to die from a drug overdose – you know – have a little fun on the way out. But now I’m thinking that dying in combat with the state would mean a lot more. Maybe take a few of those assholes with me. Luv yer work man.

….very interesting documentary, I couldn’t agree more. Unfortunately I believe it’s already too late for human kind. Make no mistake; nobody will have the power nor the recipe to stop this nightmare.
During the second half of the 19th century world population for the first time in recorded history reached the 1 billion mark. At the same time, around the 1870′s, we started to burn fossil fuel and industrialization started worldwide. In just 100 more years and despite two world wars world population grew by 3.5 times to 3.5 billion; what a coincidence! That was 1975 and we’re about to double population again within just 40 more years. Anyone connecting the dots here?????
The human race is our planets greatest parasite!!!!! But we will take care of ourselves; our never ending greed will eventually consume us and Mother Earth will just shake us off like a wet dog; an ‘endgame situation’ I can accept for myself.

  30. 30 subversive

i can understand, why so many who understand our world become nihilists just by a glance over our society. but if you DO stand in line with these blind, naive morons, you waste the chance of 1 out of 7 billon of the people on this earth potentially making a change. i also acknowledge that most of the distruction will not be reversible within our civilisation, but i for myself am willing to fight until my last breath to protect what can be protected. to save as much of this wonderful world as possible for futur generations and nature itself.

  31. 31 A

This video has not addressed some basic concepts imo, and therefore may stimulate people to think that some type of force related to punishment will make meaningful change, when it will only fuel the current overarching domination-structure:
    1. Order Out Of Chaos, aka Problem,Reaction,Solution, aka Hegelian Dialectic where-by a natural or covertly created event is used to trigger a reaction in people in which they plea for help or change and those using the event offer up their solution which often furthers control of the population.
    2. Non-violence except for The Protective Use Of Force, Without The Intent To Punish. Any action related to attempting to ‘punish’ those labeled as ‘wrong/evil/bad/dark/etc.’ can always be used in carrying out one of their motto’s mentioned above, ‘order out of chaos’ where they offer up their ‘order’: more surveillance, legislatively dismantling people’s liberty, forced vaccinations, globalization, war, … Other than trying to boycott, boycott, boycott, anything more than the ‘protective use of force, without the intent to punish’ will feed what many presidents have referred to as the ‘new world order’.

  32. 32 Param

I just watched it for the third time. Some people think that it advocates violence. I think it’s a lot more subtle than that. It certainly looks at a lot of state and corporate violence and makes a case that our whole culture is built on violence. It does look at historical episodes where violence has been used as part of a resistance movement, and whether it made a difference. It does describe non-violence as disempowering and co-optable. It does advocate organised political resistance in a multiplicity of forms. It talks about the need for a “fighting spirit”. And certainly Jensen challenges us in no uncertain terms to take a stand. And if not now then when? It’s a hellishly confronting film. I hope it goes viral and soon! We need to face the enormity, finality, and urgency – of climate change, of the devastation of species and habitat, and our own complicity in this.

  33. 33 Susan Grimsdell

This film has no answer at all, it just disparages what people who care about the planet, have tried. Is the answer, as this movie seems to claim, a violent resistance to corporate activities that are destroying the planet? I’m an activist in a city of perhaps 1.5 million. There are about 200 activists overall. I see them at all the demos, marches, and other protests held by organisations that try to stop these vile corporates. We don’t put our lives or safety on the line. We just march, sign petitions, hold stalls, pass out information, give money, get donations. Where do you think you are going to get a whole heap of people willing to put their safety on the line? We can’t even get people to turn out peacefully. 200 or so in a city of 1.5 million! Even if you did get enough people willing to throw bombs into corporate board rooms, how are you going to train them? A few activists in NZ are now up in court for being observed doing what police claim was “military training” for the purpose of carrying out violent protest.

This movie was just silly, in my view. It might as well have said that the answer to environmental destruction is to get corporates and governments to stop doing it. Why – what a good idea. Perfect. Um – how?? So the answer according to the movie is for people to get aggressive in response to corporate aggression. Why – what a good idea. Um – how??

And since when is violence ever the answer to anything? The second world war surely showed that, once and for all, (clearly not – this movie is still advocating a form of violence as the answer).

  34. 34 Green Ranger

I love environment & am willing to protect our earth. BUT I HATE THIS VIDEO VERY MUCH. the way it’s desgined making me so much headache.. hate those musics too!!! this video is designed to make us depressed instead of educating us to be good thinkers! whoever assigned students to watch this is incredibly careless and thoughtless!!

  35. 35 Green Ranger

… I just watched the video for the second time, I actually think it is amazing, but somehow I just hated it when i started the first time.

  37. 37 Laura Slitt

Flawed at the beginning as he speaks of eating salmon. THAT IS the entitled, speciesist, self-serving mind set that landed us here.

It is NOT civilized, but savage, to steal marine life from their homes, where they CAN BREATH, for dinner!

What Is happening today IS a result of humans adopting the “top of the food chain,” arrogance. WE WILL NEVER be peacemakers if we eat like and behave like predators. If people depend on a fishing industry, they massacre every other species that eats fish, including sharks, dolphin, whales, seals.
Because people eat cows, ranchers massacre wolves, cougars, coyotes, and every other species that DOES have a right to eat what is in nature for them to consume. THAT IS THE NATURAL cycle.
Humans CAN live very healthfully on a plant strong diet which would solve most of our self made plagues.

Our “ownership” mentality and looking at the world as anything but interconnected, is a downward path.

Go vegan AND STOP THE ASSAULT ON NATURE.

  38. 38 Lulu

    @Laura
You need to read Lierre Keith’s Book “The Vegetarian Myth” & anybody who judges others who eat meat need to kind of brush up on what a vegan/vegetarian diet does to our planet, whether your coming at it from a ethical standpoint or a political one.Do you know AND UNDERSTAND that a vegetarian diet is one of the main contributors to the loss of topsoil & soil erosion? Grains crops on big agra-farming operations, which are NOT healthy for the landbase, nor realistic to support an ever increasing population, are just not the way to go.
again, if ya like this film, the work Derrick, Sub-mediaTV,Franklin, read Lierres book & then make your judgement…
…as for all the naysayers—BIG whoop whoop, cause obviously those in disagreement are the sheeple we are trying to break FREE OF, lol! If ya need to be TOLD ya don’t make a cell/affinity group with 200 other sign holding, peace loving, marching peacefully while handing out info HOPING the evil-doers will just read your cute little missive & have an epiphany & all of the sudden (BECAUSE OF your little march handing out your little information packet)they will STOP what they do, killing people, killing the planet, killing for PROFIT…..what the freak world do YOU come from? And maybe people should read more these days instead of just watching a short doc & thinking THIS IS IT…..there is a whole subtext way of thinking that leads to this type of resistance….violence??? VIOLENCE as defined by WHOM?? The violence I live with daily being wrought upon me through multinationals & what they do, whether it is environmental violence, the poison they bring upon the planet with their products, factories, exhausts….there is the real violence….sheeple people, you need to break free from your shepard who TELLS you anything other than accepting your fate is the wrong way to go about your life & thus, he keeps you all well herded into your mindless groupthink.
Violence….who defines that, I live with it daily…..my communities are stopped & frisked just for being US, people of colour…industrial plants located in inner-city, poor & rural areas/neighborhoods across the good ‘ol usa…how is that NOT violence put upon us through which we have no say….!
At least when we CHOOSE to BREAK FREE of the chains of civilization, we choose our OWN paths, one unencumbered with lies, falsehoods & with eyes wide open….IF somebody “needs” to question the validity of any of this, OR be ‘convinced’ of this way of thinking….well, it is not really for you anyway!
