Guys, you forgotten about Karl Marks and his administativ planning economy, which was working in USSR and still not bad working on Cuba. Due to planning economy you could reduce usage of cars, airplane travel, whatever, but nobody would be starving in opossite what proposing you.
Please have a look at the film "The Power of Community. How Cuba Survived Peak Oil (sub español)"

You can watch it online from here:
http://vimeo.com/8653921

Anyway economy will come soon more localised. But infact that instead of buring oil we will burn more coal, which produce more CO2, we anyway will have economy recessions over the world and reducing of CO2 emmisions. USA is already uses less cars than before the begining of global ressesion in 2008, and it is only begining.

I share your cynicism Private F. The story is very complex and simple at once. An educational system, media system, and political system designed to deceived people, cant be too surprised with the drones of ignorant zombies that are created. Maybe an alien species will visit the earth and do a forensic investigation on the self-destructive epidemic that hit earth. The obituary should read "Homo Sapien Victim of own success". I recommend reading "Treagedy and Hope" by Carroll Quigley. When read critically, he is actually making a case against civilization, and makes some of the same points as Derrick Jensen.

What will engage The United States of America? Nothing. As long as flashing pictures of how bad the third world has it,nothing will cause America to engage. What a great and wonderful day it will be when the seas rise and drown the great cities of the world! Then true people from TX,WY, and other great places will take over.If a few billion people, say 3-5 billion, die it will just help keep the oil and coal burning longer. We have too many poor. Now is the time to clean the place up. Like New Orleans. As I heard on the left wing cable box as the Dow was going below 6800, "We need to stay with what we know and leave the Alternate Energy alone until we use what we have". Conventional Wisdom RULES!!! People do not believe in "Nature" or even "God". Just the Markets. Adam Smith's great invisible hand is our only God. Why? Think about it. All other social institutions have failed them. Prayer has failed. Government has failed. So let the market rule. Time's up for "Education". Game over. The Corporation wins.Humanity dies. What a pity we will take so many other species with us. Stop thinking about 2100. We will never see 2025.Besides, the current problem with the markets was caused by poor people forcing scared, frightened, exploited Bankers into making them home loans. As soon as the poor are in the streets the markets will recover. Check the records. There has to be a final solution to having to put up with poor people.Maybe we can make them into oil! Cheney may have a group working on that now.

What keeps informed Americans from resisting is the same mechanism that kept the Jews outside of the Warsaw ghetto uprising from resisting. People seek to keep themselves from harm's way at every chance, unless harm is thrust in their face. But, even this burden of harm is not enough unless it is associated with the probability that resistance against it will result in success.

To be sure, sometimes the sheer futility of a situation can cause explosive resistance (as in the case of the Palestinian resistance), but the likelihood of this scenario is practically nonexistent without proper settings - that is, a prolonged, degrading, spacio-temporal gestation (i.e Gaza and the West Bank).

In the end, Americans may need fire in their hallway, quickly approaching their door, before action is taken. Whether this statement be correct or not, the collective lessons of Slavoj Zizek and Naomi Klien should ring in our ears: (respectively) we must create philosophical and intellectual roadmaps (which take into account the failures and lessons of the liberal left's past) for our members on the field to utilize, and policy plans must be hashed out so that, when time permits, they can be picked up and implemented by those in need (a leftist co-opting of Friedmanite ideology).
