GreenPeace/GreenPolice: Communique of Copenhagen Black Bloc

This communique was given out by a portion of the Black Bloc during the march to the Bella Centre on Saturday at the protests against the U.N. COP-15. Shortly after releasing this communique, windows of the Danish stock exchange and Foreign Ministry were broken. When the police attempted arrests, the Black Bloc was physically prevented by some members of Climate Justice Action from joining the “System Change Not Climate Change” bloc. While the COP15 is over, the debate over the role of internal policing and the “non-violence” code of Climate Justice Action has just begun in the European autonomous movements.

Amongst thousands of people who want to save the world, we are getting together to march to the Bella Centre, but something feels wrong. The slogans just seem too familiar. “Traditional wisdom and new technology must go hand in hand.” Haven’t we been reading them on the ads all over town?

Drowning sheikhs

DrowningA bit less than a month ago, a rather special man sat on a flight back from London. He was more than a bit dejected. The European leaders that had flocked to his side had just wagged their fingers at him for the billions his little city owed their nations. He was to them no longer the wunderkid that had raised a metropolis in the middle of a desert.

And then he picked up a copy of the Times that nearly made his royal blood boil right out of his skin onto his gold-threaded kandura.

Upon arriving back home in Dubai, the man, who was Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, ordered the Ministry of Information and police to confiscate all copies of the Sunday Times from news stands. Continue reading ‘Drowning sheikhs’

The Technocrats of India

mansingh1I was meandering through a shop a few months ago – one of those hipster places that sells things that make you feel like you’re not really buying but sharing whatever the hell it is that’s caught your eye.

My friend, who was similarly meandering about pointed to someone and said to me, “Isaac, America’s the only country where people walk about wearing t-shirts with the president’s face on it. It’s weird. You won’t catch anyone in India doing that.”

Now, I’m a thinking man, and this statement got me thinking. Though I’ve only been to my native land, India, for less than a year if one were to stalk me and cumulate each month-long visit, I do take a bit of interest in the culture and politics there. I mean, where the hell else do you have baby-tossing rituals? Continue reading ‘The Technocrats of India’

Premise 10: The culture and most of its members are insane

As I type this, leaders from the biggest industrialized nations are meeting in Copenhagen to discuss a possible treaty to diminish worldwide carbon emissions. As reported last month, it is already known that no deal will be reached during these talks. Many scientists say time is running out and others say it’s too late. Meanwhile in Canada, the forces of capitalism and industry are moving full force to extract the last bits of oil from the Alberta tar sands. The insanity of this project perfectly exemplifies Premise 10 from Derrick Jensen’s “Endgame”

COP15: Be part of the party!

Copenhagen – COP15 – World Climate Summit

On December 12th 2009 a mass demonstration against the COP15 Climate Summit will take place in Copenhagen. A mixture of very different people, groups and organizations are going to participate.

Unfortunately, the official route of the demonstration will directly lead out of the city centre into a barren part of town around the conference building, where it is going to end. It will also not be possible for us to change our mind on the way and turn around in order to bring our protest to public places, as after 30 minutes the demonstration will cross a draw-bridge, which can prevent us from returning to the inner city in the blink of an eye. This is why we think it is important to make up our minds beforehand, which way we want to go.

All information about travel, sleeping places, legal rights, actions, maps, food, medics, etc. can be found at www.climate-justice-action.org.
